Overview
Rise's own blocks don't have a hover-tooltip feature, a Labeled Graphic marker shows its extra text on click or tap, which already works for keyboard and screen reader learners. This issue almost always comes from an Embed block, custom HTML or a third-party widget added on top of Rise that shows text only on mouse hover.
Step-by-step instructions
- 1
Open the Embed block and find the icon or object that shows text on hover.
- 2
Note what that text says, this is the description you need to preserve for every learner.
- 3
In the embedded HTML, add that same text as the object's title or aria-label so it reaches a screen reader, or add it as visible text near the icon if it needs to be visible to sighted keyboard users too.
- 4
If you don't control the embedded code, consider replacing the hover-only element with a native Rise block, like a Labeled Graphic marker, that shows the same text on click.
- 5
Tab to the icon to confirm it's reachable, then test with a screen reader to confirm the description is read aloud.

Tips
- If the hover text just repeats something already visible elsewhere on the lesson, you may not need to duplicate it, confirm nothing is actually lost first.
- Test by unplugging your mouse. If you can't reach the same text with Tab, a keyboard-only learner can't either.
Common mistakes
- Adding a custom hover effect inside an Embed block without checking whether its text reaches keyboard and screen reader learners too.
- Assuming a widget is accessible just because it looks polished, always test it directly.
Why it matters
Some learners can't hover a mouse to see a tooltip, and a screen reader won't read it aloud unless it's connected properly. Without another way to reach that text, those learners miss it completely.
