How to Fix Missing Video Captions in Rise 360

Overview

Rise doesn't generate captions for you, every video needs its own caption file added when you upload it. Beyond captions, two more things matter for video: the player controls need to work with a keyboard alone, and anything the video shows visually that the narration doesn't already describe needs to be covered another way.

Step-by-step instructions

   Open the Video block.

   Check whether a caption file is attached.

   If not, add one when you upload or edit the video.

   Play the video using only the keyboard, confirm you can reach and operate play, pause, and volume without a mouse.

   Watch the video with your eyes closed. If you lose information that only exists visually, the narration needs to describe it, or you need to add a short description in a Text block below the video.

Tips

• Keep videos short and focused, a 90-second video is much easier to caption accurately, and much easier for a learner to rewatch, than a 10-minute one.
• Write your caption file directly from your narration script rather than after the fact, it stays more accurate to what was actually said.
• If a video is purely decorative with no real instructional content, consider whether it needs to be there at all rather than trying to caption filler footage.

Common mistakes

• Uploading a video with no caption file, Rise doesn't create one automatically.
• Recording a screen demo where the meaning is entirely visual, with narration that never describes what's on screen.
• Using a caption file that doesn't match the final edited version of the video.

Why it matters

Deaf and hard-of-hearing learners get no access to a video's audio without captions.
