How to Fix Small or Hard-to-Tap Buttons in Storyline 360

Make this button bigger, or add more space around it.

Overview

A button that's easy to click with a precise mouse pointer can be genuinely hard to tap accurately with a finger, or for someone with a tremor or limited fine motor control. This is especially common with small icon buttons packed close together, like a row of navigation arrows or a tightly spaced toolbar.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. 1

Select the button or icon that looks small or crowded.

  2. 2

Check its size, a comfortable minimum tap target is roughly 24 by 24 pixels, and larger is better on primary actions like Next or Submit.

  3. 3

Resize the button itself if it's genuinely too small.

  4. 4

If the button size is fine but it's sitting too close to neighboring controls, increase the spacing between them instead.

  5. 5

Preview the course on an actual phone or tablet if you can, not just at desktop size, spacing problems are much more obvious on a touchscreen.

Tips

  • Primary actions the learner uses constantly, Next, Submit, Continue, deserve extra size and breathing room, they get tapped the most.
  • When several small controls sit in a row, spacing between them matters as much as the size of each one.
  • This check matters even if your course is only ever viewed on desktop, mouse precision varies by learner too.

Common mistakes

  • Icon-only navigation controls sized for visual style rather than comfortable tapping.
  • Several small buttons placed edge to edge with no gap between them.
  • Only testing button size and spacing on a desktop mouse, never on a touchscreen.

Why it matters

Learners with limited mobility, or anyone on a phone or tablet, can struggle to tap a small target accurately.
