Why this matters
Storyline's screen reader reading order generally follows the order objects were added to the slide (its timeline order), not their visual position. A slide built visually left to right or top to bottom can still read out of sequence for a screen reader user if the underlying object order does not match, and the effect gets worse on slides that use layers or states, since a layer's own object order is separate from the base layer's.
Storyline 360 example
A base layer has a heading added first, then an image, then a paragraph of body text. Later, a designer moves the paragraph above the image visually by dragging it upward on the slide. The visual order now reads heading, text, image, but a screen reader still announces heading, image, text, because the underlying object order on the Timeline never changed.
Rise 360 example
Rise blocks are read in the order they are stacked in the lesson editor, which usually matches the visual order automatically. This issue is much more common in Storyline, where an object's visual position and its reading order are two separate things that can drift apart.
How to fix it
- 1Check the reading order of every slide that has been visually rearranged after the objects were first added
- 2Confirm layers and states have their own reading order checked separately from the base layer
- 3Reorder objects, not just move them visually, so the underlying order matches what a sighted learner sees
- 4Test with a screen reader on the actual published output, not just a visual review in the editor
Fix in Storyline 360
- 1Open the Home ribbon and use the Tab Order button, or the Accessibility panel, to view and reorder the slide's reading order directly
- 2Reorder any object whose position in that list does not match its visual position on the slide
- 3Repeat this check on every layer separately, a layer's reading order is not inherited from the base layer
- 4Re-check after any later edit that moves an object visually, since moving an object does not automatically update its reading order
Fix in Rise 360
- 1Reorder blocks directly in the Rise lesson editor using its drag handles, this updates both the visual order and the reading order together
- 2If a block's internal content (such as a labeled graphic or accordion) has its own internal ordering, check that separately
- 3Test the published lesson with a screen reader to confirm the announced order matches what you see
Common questions
Why does my Storyline slide read out of order even though it looks correct?
Storyline's reading order generally follows the order objects were added to the slide, not their current visual position. If an object was moved visually after being added, its reading order position usually does not move with it, until you fix that directly in the Tab Order or Accessibility panel.
Do I need to check every layer separately?
Yes. Each layer in Storyline has its own reading order, separate from the base layer and from other layers, so fixing the base layer does not fix a layer's own reading order.
Is this the same issue as focus order?
It is closely related but not identical. Focus order (WCAG 2.4.3) is specifically about the sequence keyboard focus moves through interactive elements. Reading order (WCAG 1.3.2) is about the sequence all content, interactive or not, is announced in. The same underlying Storyline setting affects both, so fixing one usually helps the other, but they are two distinct WCAG criteria.
