Course Engagement Review

A11yCheck reviews content density and reading level in your Articulate course and surfaces advisory findings, so you can decide what, if anything, to change before you publish.

What Course Engagement reviews today

Course Engagement is scoped to what A11yCheck can evaluate directly from your course text today — two checks, not a broad prediction of learner behaviour.

Content density

Flags slides or pages carrying a high volume of text relative to the space available, based on word count. Dense slides can be harder to scan, particularly for learners moving through content quickly.

Reading level

Estimates the reading grade level of your course text using an established readability formula. Complex sentence structure and vocabulary raise the reading level required to follow the content.

Advisory findings, not compliance findings

Accessibility and Course Quality findings map to specific standards and defects, so they carry a severity rating and step-by-step fix instructions. Course Engagement findings work differently — there is no single correct word count or reading level for every course, so each finding instead includes what was observed, the reasoning behind it, and something to consider.

You review each finding and decide whether a change fits your course, your audience, and your instructional goals. A11yCheck surfaces the pattern; the Instructional Designer makes the call.

What Course Engagement does not do

  • It does not predict how learners will respond to your course.
  • It does not assign an engagement score.
  • It does not measure or promise improved completion, retention, or business outcomes.
  • It does not replace your judgment as the Instructional Designer.

Course Engagement will continue to evolve as additional review capabilities are introduced.

Frequently asked questions

Is Course Engagement a live feature?

Yes. Course Engagement is included in every scan alongside Accessibility and Course Quality — it is not a beta or upcoming module.

What does A11yCheck currently review for Course Engagement?

Two things: content density (how much text sits on a slide or page relative to the space available) and reading level (an estimate of the reading grade level of your course text). Both are based on the text A11yCheck can read directly from your course.

Why are Course Engagement findings different from Accessibility and Course Quality findings?

Accessibility and Course Quality findings map to specific standards and defects, so they carry a severity rating and step-by-step fix instructions. Course Engagement findings are advisory — there is no single correct word count or reading level for every course, so each finding includes what was observed and the reasoning behind it, and leaves the judgment call to you.

Does A11yCheck predict how learners will respond to my course?

No. A11yCheck does not measure or predict learner engagement, assign an engagement score, or estimate completion or retention. It reviews text-based patterns in your course and surfaces what it finds — what that means for your specific learners is a judgment only you can make.
